This year again, all participants will receive a souvenir adapted to the distances they walked.
We distribute medals and bars on a five-year cycle.
This means that you can obtain each type of medal only once during these five years. In the other years of the cycle, the participant only receives the annual bar.
A walker who chooses a different combination of distances during this cycle that results in a different type of medal than the one previously received will of course receive a new medal in addition to the annual bar.
You can pick up the medal or trophy at the registration desk at the finish on your last walking day. It is understood that prizes will only be awarded after checking the scanning at the start, on the course and at the finish.
The souvenir you receive depends on the combination of the distances you have covered over several days. Each walker is entitled to only one souvenir:

Since 2005, the organisations of the two Belgian Defence walks, namely the European Walk of Remembrance and Friendship (Marche européenne du Souvenir et de l’Amitié – MESA) and the Four Days of the Yser, have joined forces to offer their most loyal participants an additional souvenir FREE of charge, in order to further highlight their performance.
Which souvenir did we choose?
We opted for a solid, matt, silver-coloured medal, presented in a luxurious box. It has a diameter of 5 cm and is engraved on both sides. On the front side of it, you can see a combination of the medals of the two walks shown on a map of Belgium with the words “Marsen van Defensie – Marches de la Défense”. On the back side, the logo of the Belgian Defence is reproduced, with the inscription “Vierdaagse van de IJzer – Marche européenne du Souvenir et de l’Amitié”.
Who is eligible for that medal?
To be eligible for this medal, interested persons must meet two conditions:
For example, the participation in the Four Days of the Yser in 2016 and the MESA in 2017 (10 months apart) does not entitle the walker to a medal.
For example, a walker who gives up on the 3rd day of the MESA, but who covers the full distance during the Four Days of the Yser, or who completes the MESA, but only covers 16 km on the 4th day of the Four Days of the Yser, will not be eligible for the medal.
“I meet the conditions. How can I receive the medal?”
You can only submit your request by filling in the electronic form: click here.
If, after checking the split times of the two walks, it appears that you meet the conditions, we will send you the medal free of charge after 15th November.
